Oxford University Bangla Society to Host Book Launch: "Tarique Rahman – Politics and Policies Contemporary Bangladesh"
The Oxford University Bangla Society will host a special book launch titled "Tarique Rahman: Politics and Policies Contemporary Bangladesh." The event will bring together students, academics, and guests to discuss the life, ideas, and leadership of Mr. Tarique Rahman, Acting Chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
The book explores how Mr. Rahman's political journey, vision, and principles have influenced Bangladesh's democratic movements and helped shape the country into a prosperous nation in the modern world — while addressing the challenges of South Asia and global geopolitics, and maintaining a balance between USA, China, India, and other development partners.
A Leader Formed by Struggle and Service
Tarique Rahman was born into a family deeply connected with Bangladesh's history. His father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, declared the country's independence in 1971, and his mother, Begum Khaleda Zia, became the nation's first female Prime Minister.
As a child, Tarique Rahman experienced the harsh realities of the Liberation War. He, his mother, and his younger brother were imprisoned by occupying forces, making him one of the youngest prisoners of war, while his father led the fight for Bangladesh's independence. These experiences taught him about courage, sacrifice, and the true meaning of freedom.
After completing his studies in International Relations at the University of Dhaka, he became active in the movement for democracy during the 1980s against General Ershad's dictatorship. He officially joined the BNP in 1988, starting at the grassroots level and building strong connections with ordinary people.
Vision for Democratic and Inclusive Politics
Tarique Rahman has always believed in democracy that starts from the ground up. He organised grassroots leaders and activists to ensure fairness and transparency within the party.
Before the 2001 national election, he launched research initiatives to understand local issues, good governance, and economic reform. His inclusive approach helped the BNP win a landslide victory that year. Despite being the son of two national leaders, he chose not to take any government post. Instead, he focused on strengthening the party and empowering citizens.
His policies have supported farmers' welfare, female education, environmental awareness, and social equity — reflecting his belief in self-reliance, justice, and honesty in politics.
Leadership During Exile and Fight for Democracy
In 2007, Tarique Rahman became a victim of political persecution under a military-backed regime and was forced to leave Bangladesh for medical reasons. Yet, even in exile, he continued to lead the BNP and speak out for democracy and human rights.
In 2018, after his mother was imprisoned, he became Acting Chairman of the BNP and has since guided the party through one of the most difficult periods in Bangladesh's political history. His leadership was especially visible during the July 2024 Movement, which marked a historic chapter in the nation's democratic struggle.
The July 2024 Uprising: A Turning Point
The July 2024 Uprising began as a student protest against unfair job quotas but quickly grew into a nationwide movement calling for democracy and justice. Under Tarique Rahman's strategic leadership, the movement united students, professionals, and ordinary citizens against an increasingly authoritarian regime.
Long before the protests, in 2014, Rahman had spoken publicly about reforming the quota system to make it fair and merit-based. This early position showed his consistent belief in equality and fairness.
When violence erupted during the protests, Rahman condemned the government's actions and called for peace, unity, and perseverance. He also urged the Bangladeshi diaspora to raise international awareness when the regime blocked internet access at home.
On 5 August 2024, the regime finally collapsed, and its leader fled the country. Despite the victory, Rahman urged his supporters to remain calm, avoid revenge, and focus on rebuilding the nation with honour and discipline.
Reform, Responsibility, and a Vision for the Future
Following the uprising, Tarique Rahman reminded citizens that true change is more than replacing a government — it requires moral renewal, institutional reform, and better leadership. His 31-Point Reform Plan outlines goals for stronger democratic institutions, economic liberalisation, and transparency in governance.
He has also emphasised the role of youth and diaspora in national development. With over 60% of Bangladesh's population under 35, he believes in investing in education, skills, and entrepreneurship to turn Bangladesh into a prosperous and self-reliant nation.
Rahman's call for ethical leadership and responsible governance has made him not only a political figure but also a symbol of reform and hope for millions at home and abroad.
Why the Oxford Event Matters
The Oxford University book launch will be more than a celebration of a new publication. It will be an opportunity to discuss the future of democracy in Bangladesh and the broader lessons of leadership, justice, and moral courage that the life of Tarique Rahman represents.
Students, academics, and global observers will explore how his story — from the trials of war and political struggle to the leadership of a democratic movement — reflects the challenges and possibilities facing Bangladesh today.
Conclusion: A New Chapter for Bangladesh
As Bangladesh enters a new democratic era, Tarique Rahman's leadership continues to inspire hope. His journey — marked by struggle, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility — shows how political change can be guided by ethics, inclusion, and a vision for national unity.
The July Uprising of 2024 stands as a symbol of this new beginning — a movement that not only ended a regime but also awakened the spirit of democracy among Bangladesh's people.
The story of Tarique Rahman is, ultimately, the story of a nation striving for justice, dignity, and democratic renewal.
